Research Projects

I am currently working in two projects. One deals with nitrogen fertilization practices used in spinach cultivation in California and its impact on the nutritional quality, shelf life and anatomy of spinach. The other looks into interactions of N fertilization on survival and host surface and sub-surface microbial interactions between E. coli O157:H7 and native microbial communities. We are also looking into the impacts of these practices on nitrate leaching. Our main goal for both projects is to evaluate the sustainability of spinach cultivation in California and generate information that could positively impact agronomic practices that can reduce the risk for contamination with this human pathogen.

Research Interests

I am interested in the interactions of nitrogen and soil organic matter under field crop production and how these parameters influence microbial populations and the survival and proliferation of human pathogens in these environments. I am also interested in optimizing agronomic practices that would allow growers to obtain profitable yields without the use of excess fertilization and the impact of these conditions on food supply and nutritional quality.

Awesome classes new students must take

Plant Biochemistry, Soil Water Relations, Isotope probing (seminar), Microbial Ecology, Sensory Evaluation

Hobbies

hiking, surfing, snowboarding anything with sand, water, snow or challenging gravity!!!!
